Staff wellbeing at heart of County Durham vets fundraising drive

Prince Bishop Vets is offering free nail clipping and dental checks as part of a fundraising drive to raise awareness of mental health in the veterinary profession.

Prince Bishop Veterinary Hospital in Leadgate, Consett, is inviting clients to bring their pets for a free nail clipping and dental check to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation – a charity which aims to address the source of mental health problems.

According to figures from Vetlife – a crisis helpline for the veterinary profession – vets in the UK are three times more likely than the general population to commit suicide.

As part of their commitment to their staff’s wellbeing, Prince Bishop Vets want to raise awareness and help end the stigma surrounding mental health in the veterinary world.

They are organising the free nail clipping and dental checks to raise funds and awareness about this issue.

While dental checks are free all year round with a veterinary nurse, owners can bring their pets in for a free nail clip in lieu of a donation to the Mental Health Foundation.

Clinical Director Christina Stubbins said: “As a practice, we want tot make sure all our staff feel supported. Their wellbeing is very important to us as, without them, we can’t deliver the best care to our clients.

“Keeping your pet’s nails trimmed is really important as it can help to prevent further health problems including mobility issues and ingrown nails in cats.

“Dental healthcare in pets is often neglected, so we hope clients will take this opportunity to come and learn how to keep their pet’s teeth and nails in tip-top condition.

“Prevention is always better than the cure, so by demonstrating how to properly clean pets’ teeth we will help to reduce the number of dental problems we see in our surgery.”

According to Pet Smile, more than 80% of cats and dogs require immediate dental treatment.

Along with a dental check, owners will also receive free advice on how to keep their pets’ teeth and gums healthy.

The free nail clipping clinics and dental checks will run throughout May at the Prince Bishop Veterinary Hospital in Leadgate, Consett and their branch surgery in Crook.

The nail clipping clinics and dental checks will be available to cats, dogs, rabbits and other small furries.
